The film premiered at the El Capitan Theatre on December 4, 2019, and was theatrically released in the United States on December 25, 2019. It has grossed 157 million worldwide and it received generally positive reviews from critics. Plot [ edit] Lance Sterling, a cocky secret agent of H. T. U. V. (Honor, Trust, Unity and Valor) is sent to recover an attack drone from Japanese arms dealer Katsu Kimura in Japan. As soon as the buyer, cybernetically enhanced terrorist Killian, arrives, Sterling breaks in against the orders of H. director Joy Jenkins, defeats Kimura and his gang, and manages to escape with the briefcase containing the drone. Sterling returns to H. headquarters to confront Walter Beckett, a socially inept MIT graduate and outcast young scientist, for equipping nonlethal weapons into his suit. Walter tries to convince Sterling that there is a more peaceful way to save the world, but Sterling fires him before he can explain his latest invention: biodynamic concealment. Sterling discovers the briefcase to be empty and is confronted by Marcy Kappel, a security forces agent, who reveals footage of Sterling (actually Killian in a holographic disguise) leaving with the drone, labeling him as a traitor. Sterling escapes the H. and decides to track down Walter to help him disappear. Meanwhile, Killian breaks into the H. weapons facility. While searching Walter's home for his invention, Sterling unknowingly ingests the concoction and transforms into a pigeon. Before Walter can start making an antidote to change him back, Marcy and other H. agents chase the duo through the city, but they escape in Sterling's spy car. The two track down Kimura to a resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. There, they learn of Killian's whereabouts in Venice, Italy before Marcy and the H. can capture them again. On their way to Venice, Walter attempts to make the antidote, but fails. Arriving in Venice, Walter is confronted by the H. V., who are unaware of Sterling's condition. Revealing that she knows about Wendy, Walter's mother who was a police officer who died on duty, Marcy tries to convince him to help turn Sterling in, but Walter refuses. Suddenly, a drone distracts the H. and allows Walter and Sterling to escape. The two discover the drone carrying the H. agent database, and Walter manages to retrieve it. However, Killian shows up, takes the database, and prepares to kill Walter. With help from hundreds of pigeons in the surrounding area, they distract Killian and flee. Disguised as Sterling once more, Killian escapes the H. V., shaking Marcy's suspicions of Sterling upon her seeing him with a robot hand. Whilst underwater in a submarine, Walter reveals he planted a tracking device on Killian and locates him at the weapons facility. Walter manages to perfect the antidote and successfully turns Sterling human again. Reaching Killian's hideout, Sterling is concerned about Walter's safety and sends him away in the submarine. Once inside, Sterling confronts Killian, but is defeated and captured as Killian reveals he has mass produced hundreds of drones to target everyone at the agency using the database as revenge for killing his crew in a past mission led by Sterling. Noticing Walter returning in the submarine, Killian destroys it; unbeknownst to them, Walter survives with the help of one of his inventions, the inflatable hug. Once Walter frees Sterling, the two escape and contact Marcy for support as the drones approach H. headquarters in Washington D. C. Walter attempts to hack into Killian's bionic arm. When Killian realizes this, he tries to flee via air with a drone, but Walter catches up. Walter risks his life by trapping Killian in one of his protective gadgets and deactivates the villain's arm as Walter himself falls, but Sterling, who has turned himself back into a pigeon, successfully flies for the first time and carries him to safety with help from other pigeons, while Killian is found and arrested. Despite saving the world, Sterling, back in his human form (except for his right hand, which is temporarily remaining tiny) and Walter are fired for disobedience. Walter Beckett (Tom Holland)is one of these inventors, a starry‑eyed idealist who believes grenades that blast glitter and project giant holographic kittens can be just as effective as weapons that kill and maim. Lance fundamentally disagrees. His first encounter with Walter is not promising, but its the beginning of a partnership that will change Lances life, not to mention his entire genetic code: Walter has invented a serum that can turn a human into a pigeon. This pacy animation is the first feature for directors Troy Quane and Nick Bruno, both of whom worked in various capacities on other Blue Sky Studios productions, such as Ferdinand and the Ice Age series. With its giddy pace and dizzying action set pieces, its an enjoyable holiday watch for family audiences. Theres a new adaptation of Little Women, the epic ultra-blockbuster Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and, of course, James Corden as a terrifying humanoid feline in Cats. To that list, you can add Will Smith as a pigeon spy in Spies in Disguise. Sadly, that logline is the most interesting thing about the film. The spy in question is Will Smiths Bond-like Lance Sterling, for whom everything always goes right in the field. Hes the best spy in the world. However, he is framed for a crime against the spy agency involving a potentially killer drone and, as a result, he must disguise himself in order to evade capture and take down mechanical-handed villain Killian (Ben Mendelsohn. He turns to the assistance of gadget whizz kid Walter Beckett (Tom Holland) who is trialling a new method of “bio-dynamic concealment”. Soon, Lance is in the body of a pigeon, neutralising much of his very particular set of skills. Its fair to say that the premise of this is a lot of fun and, thanks to Ice Age studio Blue Sky, the animation is colourful and peppy, if a little overtly digital and soulless. Unfortunately, theres very little heart and energy in this beyond that central idea, which seems to have been the only concept that differentiates this from every other animated movie. The zippy action looks passé in the wake of the far superior Big Hero 6 and, most notably, last years visually masterful Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The plot is generic conspiracy thriller stuff, right up to the inclusion of the villainous Killian – more often referred to simply as “Robo-Hand” due to his Doc Ock-like metal claw. He benefits somewhat from baddie extraordinaire Mendelsohn adding every malevolent rasp possible to his Aussie twang, but his plot makes little sense and is indistinguishable from that of many other recent big screen evil folk. He also has some plot-unecessary facial scarring as well, to complete the set of clichés. Its probably meant as Bond parody, but that field is so over-played at this point that its rather difficult to tell. Holland and Smith do their best to inject their innate charisma into the movie, but theres so little wit or spark to Brad Copeland and Lloyd Taylors script that theyre largely left with very little to play on. Theyre pursued by a trio of agency operatives played by Rashida Jones, Karen Gillan and, bizarrely, DJ Khaled – surely a group of actors everyone has been dreaming of pulling together for years. Its a talented, if unusual cast, with nothing to do but work their way through the beats of a standard family movie narrative. It seems remarkable to argue that a film in which Will Smith voices a superspy who turns into a pigeon is boring, but it really is. Once the initial fun of that premise has been milked, the movie simply runs completely dry on the ideas front and just settles into the groove of the standard kiddie blockbuster.
